SPRING GREENERY!

HAPPY SPRING!

I know many of you have been enjoying beautiful Spring weather for a while, but for us it has not felt like Spring until, maybe (fingers crossed) this weekend!

I’ve been seeing some lovely shades of green in home decor lately.  No, not your Forest Green from the 90’s.  This green is a nice soft, pleasant green, like “Sage Advice” from Country Chic Paint.  It is such a pretty shade of green, and even if “green” is not your thing, I think you will find this shade most pleasant.  In my opinion, It pairs so well with light wood, mixed in with white painted pieces.

This sideboard was just the right piece to try out this color.  It is solid pine.   Now the seller told me that it dates early 19th century.   Hmmm, I know it is old, but not sure that it is that old!  What do you think?

When I purchased it, it looked like this:

Did you notice the doors?

While I was unscrewing the hinges on the doors, I noticed that the original owners had turned the doors backwards.  Now why would you want to hide such beautiful detail?

Since this piece seemed to have had a wax build-up, I did not take any chances and therefore sanded the whole piece quite aggressively, then I also wiped it down with mineral spirits.  This way I am assured that the paint will adhere properly.

I painted two coats of paint and then sanded, sanded, sanded again, almost burnishing the paint into the wood.  I wanted a really smooth finish for this one.  The only way to get such a lustrous smooth sheen is to sand before you apply your wax.  After sanding, I applied two coats of clear wax and buffed it.

I also painted the bottom of the drawers.

I did quite a bit of distressing on this piece since I wanted to have a lot of the light wood come through.  I kept the original brass hardware as they are so pretty.

Now, I’m hoping these herbs can be planted outdoors in a couple of weeks.

A few weeks ago, my husband came home with a bunch of old windows that were left on the curb of a home being renovated.  I know most of you will see these as pure junk, but I have a few projects coming up with these windows and will write a post soon.

Have a great weekend.

Mary

Thanks Joanne – I am usually drawn to "blue" painted pieces, but this was such a refreshing change.

I love how you chose to give this piece new life. The color is perfect. I’ve known of people leaving furniture doors open rather than closing them, and have turned the doors around in order to be able to see the correct side of them even when opened. Perhaps that is why the doors were reversed??

I love this piece! The color reminds me of spring. The door details are perfect. I have been reading about painting furniture for awhile and thinking maybe I should try that. Beautiful work.

Gorgeous makeover Mary. Wow, I can’t believe the previous owners would hide such gorgeous details either. I love how you staged this photo too – very nice!

Maybe, it’s as Jeannie mentioned above or maybe someone that did not like antique-looking furniture and so by turning them around, it looks for "modern-ish".

Beautiful! That color looks perfect on that piece. Crazy that the doors were backwards….I search for details like that! Love the look of the roses drying in front of the windows, too. You always have such talent for staging your beautiful work!

Mary,I adore your Spring Greenery within this make~over, dear one!!!I agree this piece is probably around the 1920’s. . .my Grandmother had one similar. It also, had a dining room table and 8 chairs that matched the legs on your sidebar!Gorgeous detailing!!!Fondly,Pat

That soft, green color is beautiful. I began studying your "before" photo before I read your entire post. I was puzzling over how you added the arches and the shells. Surprise! Also, I always love your staging.

Mary, looking at this piece again I didn’t realize that was a Country Chic Paint color – Sage Advice, is it new? I love it and planned to head over to my local Country Chic Paint supplier this afternoon and this color will definitely end up in my shopping bag!
